TERMINAL FERROVIÁRIO E RODOVIÁRIO DE CARREGUEIRO  ALJUSTREL ? PORTUGAL     
O CARREGUEIRO ROAD & RAIL TERMINAL é uma infraestrutura de alta qualidade vocacionada para o desenvolvimento da logística e transportes com importância crucial para a economia em todo o Sul de Portugal e não só. O seu potencial e relevância para os concelhos de Aljustrel e Castro Verde é grande. Seu valor agregado para o sério desenvolvimento econômico de toda a região sul, incluindo seu interior, é enorme. 
A proximidade de todas as principais estradas que atravessam a região, como as autoestradas A2 e IP2, a criação de um cluster de empresas de serviços aeronáuticos na área (nomeadamente graças ao investimento da EMBRAER) e o valor comercial do Aeroporto de Beja e do Porto de Sines, justificam amplamente o investimento no TERMINAL.

O CARREGUEIRO ROAD & RAIL TERMINAL foi construído no início da década de 1990 pela empresa mineira SOMINCOR ? Sociedade Mineira de Neves Corvo, SA, para gerir o escoamento da sua produção mineira das minas de Santa Bárbara de Padrões ? Neves Corvo ? Castro Verde, a cerca de 30 km da TERMINAL.   
A SOMINCOR concebeu e construiu a infraestrutura, que passou a ser gerida pela Transportes Ribatejo, que durante 8 anos transportou por via rodoviária os produtos mineiros de Neves Corvo até ao TERMINAL, que também foram transportados para o Porto de Setúbal por via férrea ao abrigo de um acordo com a CP Caminhos de Ferro Portugueses.   
No final da década de 1990, a SOMINCOR passou a recorrer exclusivamente ao desembaraço ferroviário dos seus produtos mineiros e o TERMINAL foi desativado.
CONFIGURAÇÃO REGIONAL   
A população da região é inferior a 5% do total nacional. O desemprego situa-se regularmente 3% acima da mediana nacional. A revitalização deste tipo de infraestrutura é, portanto, de vital importância regional e nacional e merecerá atenção prioritária das autoridades governamentais regionais e nacionais.   
O TERMINAL RODOVIÁRIO E FERROVIÁRIO DO CARREGUEIRO é, de facto, uma prioridade em termos de desenvolvimento sustentável da Região do Alentejo. A sua localização geográfica é excelente: Beja fica a 30km; Évora, 95km; Aljustrel (ALMINA, SA Complexo Mineiro), 5 km; Castro Verde, 7km; Faro (aeroporto) ou Portimão 90 km; Loulé, 70km; o porto comercial de Sines, a 50 km. Estes justificam a instalação de todas as iniciativas nas áreas de transporte intermodal, indústria, logística e armazenagem.   
A área disponível para a construção de estruturas industriais e/ou de armazenamento estende-se a 9.500 m2. A área total da propriedade é de 33.000 m2 (classificada como lotes urbanos).

A reabertura das minas de pirita de Aljustrel, exploradas pela ALMINA, SA, a par do crescimento do desenvolvimento económico e social, trouxe esperança a uma região que agora reflete progresso e desenvolvimento concomitantes.     Por outro lado, toda uma classe de jovens (de famílias de garimpeiros) manifestou o desejo de permanecer na região. O ensino técnico e superior está a aumentar entre os residentes das zonas limítrofes de Ervidel, Ferreira do Alentejo, Messejana, Aljustrel, Santiago do Cacém, Castro Verde e Ourique.   
O mercado de trabalho na região apresentou uma queda significativa na taxa de desemprego total, com aumento do emprego e dos salários. 
CARREGUEIRO RAIL & ROAD TERMINAL  ALJUSTREL ? PORTUGAL   Introduction   CARREGUEIRO ROAD & RAIL TERMINAL is a high-quality infrastructure geared towards the development of logistics and transportation with crucial significance to the economy across South Portugal and beyond. Its potential and relevance to the municipalities of Aljustrel and Castro Verde is major. Its added-value for the serious economic development of the entire southern region, including its hinterland, is enormous.  The proximity to all the major roads that cross the region, such as A2 and IP2 highways, the creation of a cluster of aeronautic service companies in the area (namely thanks to EMBRAER?s investment) and the commercial value of Beja Airport and the Port of Sines, amply justify investment in the TERMINAL.  Another crucial aspect is the decision by Spanish Group ARTEOLIVA, SA to build the Largest Olive Oil Press in the World in nearby Ferreira do Alentejo Municipality (35 km from the TERMINAL.  CARREGUEIRO ROAD & RAIL TERMINAL was built in the early 1990s by mining company SOMINCOR ? Sociedade Mineira de Neves Corvo, SA, to manage the outflow of their mining production from the Santa Bárbara de Padrões ? Neves Corvo ? Castro Verde mines, some 30km from the TERMINAL.  SOMINCOR designed and built the infrastructure, which was then managed by Transportes Ribatejo, who for 8 years transported by road the mining products from Neves Corvo to the TERMINAL, which were also carried to the Port of Setubal by rail under an agreement with CP Portuguese Railways.  By the late 1990s, SOMINCOR began resorting exclusively to railway clearance of their mining products and the TERMINAL was deactivated.  REGIONAL SETTING  The region?s population is less than 5% of the national total. Unemployment regularly stands 3% above the national median. The revitalizing of this type of infrastructure is, therefore, of vital regional and national significance and will deserve priority attention from regional and national government authorities. 
CARREGUEIRO ROAD & RAIL TERMINAL is indeed a priority in terms of the sustainable development of the Alentejo Region. Technical and college education is on the rise among residents of the neighboring areas of Ervidel, Ferreira do Alentejo, Messejana, Aljustrel, Santiago do Cacém, Castro Verde and Ourique.  The labor market in the region as shown a significant fall in total unemployment rate, with an increase in employment and salaries.   REASONS FOR INVESTMENT  The property and infrastructure of CARREGUEIRO ROAD & RAIL TERMINAL aims at fostering and developing a private investment project to include various entities and companies in the field of intermodal transportation (road & rail) of merchandise to and from South Portugal. The Promoter has engaged the technical support and expertise of ISL ? INSTITUTE OF SHIPPING ECONOMICS AND LOGISTICS, University of Bremen, Germany, with a view to develop the infrastructure. The Institute is an international benchmark in the area of consulting, researching and developing, generating the best and largest specialized surveys  and reports in the world. This led to the immediate commitment of all interested parties, including economic agents and local and regional development actors.  The growing implementation of railway goods and merchandise transportation is priority and conforms with European Union Guidelines.  Safety and securty in transportation of dangerous goods, reduced occupation of space, greater environmental protection commitments and regulations as well growing pressure on road infrastructures, make railway transportation e powerful, major means of merchandise transportation. In fact, the European railway network has witnessed large growth rates in terms of merchandise transportation ion the last three decades. Those rates will continue to increase.  The reality of the Beja Airport, which will be opened for passenger and merchandise traffic, as well as the new IP8 highway (late 2020), will reinforce economic growth and the region?s development within the context of the international transportation connection axis to Europe.     The profitability of road transportation of goods and products (which faces the challenges of strong sectorial competition and high operational costs in terms of fuel, tollway fees, fleet maintenance, authorized circulation hours) can be substantially improved by the TERMINAL.
